The Tom and Jerry cartoon, made by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, started on October 27, 1940. It became a Saturday morning favorite by 1955. The show is based on a 1937 gag film called Puss Gets the Boot. Since 1940, it has become super popular with over a hundred productions, including TV specials and videos.
Tom and Jerry got a lively style as the series went on. The look of Tom and Jerry changed too. Tom, the cat, started as blue-grey, and Jerry, the mouse, was a small brown mouse. The main idea, a cat chasing a mouse, stayed the same, but Hanna-Barbera added lots of twists to it.
